The Carnivorous Carnival (A Series of Unfortunate Events, #9)

As the series progresses, we see the Baudelaire orphans becoming wittier and wittier and finding more ways to protect themselves from Count Olaf. In this book, they end up at the Caligari Carnival where they will meet unusual characters and Madame Lulu, a clairvoyant. They discover that Madame Lulu is the reason why Count Olaf is always able to find where they are. To find out more about Olaf’s schemes, they disguise themselves as “freaks”. Will Madame Lulu give them away? Will they be able to find out where the VFD headquarters are located? Their lives are in the danger more than ever. The book ends on a spectacular cliff-hanger.

Despite my initial eagerness to delve deeper into the narrative, the unexpected weightiness of the prose caught me off guard.
