THE SPIES OF SHILLING LANE by Jennifer Ryan is my choice for the #PawsAndReadathon2022 hosted by @paws.and.read. The prompt for July is “Read a book with a mother/daughter relationship.” I could not have chosen a better book for this challenge. The relationship between Ms. Braithwaite and her daughter Betty had lots of ups and downs but ended on a very positive note. This WWII historical novel is filled with danger, action, courage, and love. I love the well-developed characters and how the author took us on a journey of self-discovery for many of them. Lady Killer, Vol. 1  by  Joëlle Jones My rating:  5 of 5 stars Holy Moly!! This graphic novel was soooooo good. I love the extraordinary illustrations and the story is just perfect. I do not agree with the statement in the introduction that “at some point your mother thought about killing you.” I am a mother, and I can confidently say that I never thought about hurting or killing my children even when they were difficult. I am sad that this author thinks that way and I just want to reassure her that not all mothers are the same. Nevertheless, this novel is about a housewife who happens to be a hired killer. She loves her family, and they are safe with her. She even showed compassion towards one of her victims. Deep down, she is not a bad person, but she definitely has mad killer skills. This enemy to lover romance novel is filled with drama, love, and has many LOL moments. The twist about Teague’s past was well done. There could have been more heated moments between Phoeby and Teague in my opinion, although the ones in the book were pretty hot. Peril at the Exposition  by  Nev March My rating:  4 of 5 stars 📚 Hello Book Friends! Nev March does it again and delivers a fantastic novel filled with action and mystery. PERIL AT THE EXPOSITION is a historical mystery that takes place during the 1893 Chicago Exposition. The book has interesting historical figure cameos. It is nice to see the relationship between Captain Jim and Diana grow and get stronger. Together they are clever detectives. The plot is strong and entertaining. Messy Roots: A Graphic Memoir of a Wuhanese-American  by  Laura Gao My rating:  4 of 5 stars 📚 Hello Book Friends! I was looking forward to reading MESSY ROOTS by Laura Gao and getting a perspective on COVID by someone who is from Wuhan, China. The book had a bit about that but it was more a memoir about Laura’s life from the time she moved from Wuhan to the USA as a child to her early twenties. The illustrations are beautiful and express many feelings. I love that she always used a red t-shirt to describe herself in the story. NEVER COMING HOME by Hannah Mary McKinnon is just that and it is well done. Ms. McKinnon got right into the male psyche to deliver a good thriller. The German Wife  by  Kelly Rimmer My rating:  5 of 5 stars 📚 Hello Book Friends! I just finished THE GERMAN WIFE by Kelly Rimmer and I am processing all the emotions this book evoked in me. No doubt about it, Ms. Rimmer delivered another fantastic and well-written historical novel. What I am struggling with is the ethics of the story. This book, although a work of fiction, is based on true events. It is an account of a German family who chose to turn a blind eye to what the German government was doing although they did not agree with it. The same family was eventually brought to the US to help build the American space program. The chocking part is that the American government turned a blind eye to their past and erased all trace of their association with the Nazis so they would not be trialed for their crimes after WWII. Ms. Rimmer succeeded to write a book that leaves the reader to decide if this decision is ethical or not. This is my favourite book by this author. I recommend it. #b

The Lost Apothecary  by  Sarah Penner My rating:  4 of 5 stars 📚 Hello Book Friends! THE LOST APOTHECARY by Sarah Penner is a beautiful story of loss, earning, and betrayal. I love the two timelines and how the author connected them through that little blue bottle. The past plot was more interesting than the present one. The three female characters (1 in the present and 2 in the past) are well written and evoked many emotions. I am glad I finally picked up this book. The Dark Matter of Mona Starr  by  Laura Lee Gulledge My rating:  5 of 5 stars 📚 Hello Book Friends! THE DARK MATTER OF MONA STARR is the second graphic novel I read by Laura Lee Gulledge. This story of fighting your dark mental demons and finding the light at the end of the tunnel was well put together. It made me reflect on my own mental health and how much I have been going and going without realising that I was ignoring the signs of a burn out and how close I was to crash. I took a few days off social medias and rested my mind. I decided to follow the advice given at the end of the book and put together a Self-Care Plan for my life. HOW TO FAIL AT FLIRTING by Denise Williams is a hot and spicy romance book with an awesome cast of characters. I love the chemistry between Naya and Jake. It was fun to see their relationship developed and how they found ways to be together. I love Naya’s checked lists too. Some parts were difficult to read because of the escalating sexual harassment. I was proud of Naya for standing for herself and finding her voice. The end was good and satisfying.
