Winter Garden  by  Kristin Hannah My rating:  5 of 5 stars 📚 Hello Book Friends! It has been a while since a book moved me to tears. WINTER GARDEN by Kristin Hannah is a wonderful story of courage, sacrifice, and forgiveness. You cannot read this novel and not be moved. Vera’s story during the gruelling 900-day siege of Leningrad by the Germans is heartbreaking and inspiring at the same time. This story reached the wife, the mother, and the sister in me and gave me food for thoughts about how much I would be willing to sacrifice for my husband, my children, and my brothers. I can’t imagine being in the same situations and having to make the same decisions and I hope I will never have to. The Survivors  by  Jane Harper My rating:  3 of 5 stars 📚 Hello Book Friends! THE SURVIVORS by Jane Harper is a slow burn and character driven mystery. The landscape described in the novel sounds magnifique. The writing is well done, but the slowness of the plot delivery almost got me thinking about not finishing this book. The Return of the Witch  by  Paula Brackston My rating:  4 of 5 stars 📚 Hello Book Friends! Have you ever had an “OMG, I know this character” moment while reading a book? This is what happened to me while reading THE RETURN OF THE WITCH by Paula Brackston. I recognised a character that was in other book by the same author: City of Time and Magic. Circus of Wonders  by  Elizabeth Macneal My rating:  3 of 5 stars 📚 Hello Book Friends! CIRCUS OF WONDERS by Elizabeth Macneal is a good read but not what I expected. I thought it would be more of a fantasy. It turned out to be more a historical account of the circus mania in England in the Victorian era. All that obsession with the curiosities, peculiars, and exotics was unsettling and I am glad I did not live during that time period to witness that. The story is well written and, although interesting, was often slow and depressing. I could only read a bit every day because it was making my winter blues bluer. The ending was satisfying but different than I thought it would be. Nuclear Winter Vol. 1  by  Cab My rating:  5 of 5 stars 📚 Hello Book Friends! It is Monday again and still very cold here. It is appropriate that I just finished NUCLEAR WINTER by Caroline Breault. This graphic novel is everything I hoped for: fun characters, beautiful illustrations, and an interesting story. Can you imagine a winter that lasts nine years? Well, this is exactly what is happening in Montreal after a major accident at a nuclear station. Flavie Beaumont avoids people as much as she can and works for a snowmobile delivery service. She is aware that the radioactive snow is starting to get to her and tries to keep her temper in check so that no one will know her secret. In this first volume, she will meet a popular guy who has an awful girlfriend; she will brave a major snowstorm to make her deliveries and fight mutants to save a baby raccoon to be eaten. All in a day’s work! I enjoyed this graphic novel, and I am looking forward to reading the next volume. #bookstadog #poo

Yinka, Where Is Your Huzband?  by  Lizzie Damilola Blackburn My rating:  4 of 5 stars YINKA, WHERE IS YOUR HUZBAND? by Lizzie Damilola Blackburn is a fun and full of drama novel. I loved all the colourful cast of characters in this novel, especially Yinka’s family and their fuss to get her a husband. Yinka’s insecurities felt real. I sympathized with her having to do all the songs and dances to please her friends and family. I cheered for her, and I felt all her emotions throughout the book. The ending was as I hoped for. I am buddy reading GLASS TOWN: THE IMAGINARY WORLD OF THE BRONTËS by Isabel Greenberg with my friends Annie (a.k.a. @pawsandpagesbyannie) and Jaclyn (a.k.a. @thewatsonreview). This awesome graphic novel is about the four Brontë children and their wild imaginations. I enjoyed the flow of the story and the illustrations. It is also a perfect mix of fantasy and historical fiction. I haven’t read any of the Brontë sisters’ books yet, but this graphic novel piqued my curiosity. THE CHRISTIE AFFAIR by Nina de Gramont was an enjoyable read about Agatha Christie’s 11-day disappearance, told from the perspective of Mrs. Christie’s husband’s mistress. I know this is a mouthful to start my review but bear with me. I have read a few books about Mrs. Christie’s short and shocking disappearance in the mid-20s’ and I can say that this one, although far from the true story, was an entertaining and romanticized view of the events. I decided to judge the book purely on the entertainment aspect and not dwell on the lack of historical accuracy. The writing is beautiful, the plot is well built, and the characters are interesting. Desolation Canyon  by  P.J. Tracy My rating:  3 of 5 stars 📚 Hello Book Friends! DESOLATION CANYON is the second book in the Detective Margaret Nolan Series by author P.J. Tracy. The plot is intelligent and complex. It was a good read overall, but the many characters were a bit confusing. I had to make a list of them and their roles to keep them straight. It also felt that Detective Nolan played a secondary role in this story. I hope there will be another book in this story and that Margaret Nolan will take more of a leading role. This is one of the most bizarre books I have read. Britt-Marie Was Here  by  Fredrik Backman My rating:  4 of 5 stars 📚 Hello Book Friends! BRITT-MARIE WAS HERE by one of my fav authors, Fredrik Backman was a lovely and witty read. I enjoyed all Britt-Marie’s quirks and she made me laugh many times. Like in all of Backman’s books, there were several touching moments that evoked sad feelings. The story of this special 63-year-old woman finding her way in this world was beautiful, moving, and uplifting. I recognised myself in Britt-Marie more than once and this put a smile on my face. A Flicker in the Dark  by  Stacy Willingham My rating:  4 of 5 stars I just finished A FLICKER IN THE DARK and it is a solid debut for author Stacy Willingham. She did an excellent job at misleading the reader into believing that one character could be the serial killer and ended the book with a jaw-dropping moment. The only flaw was Chloe. It is hard to believe that a woman with her experience and line of work, would be so naïve. The Maid  by  Nita Prose My rating:  4 of 5 stars 📚 Hello Book Friends! When I read a good book, I get quite invested in the story. The first half of THE MAID by Canadian author Nita Prose made me so upset that I had to put the book down to calm myself down. I hate injustice towards innocent people, and I hate even more when people take advantage of innocent people. The way Molly was accused of murder and how the evidence was pointing at her was making me so mad. I am glad the second half of the book brought redemption and provided an awesome ending to this story. The characters who stepped in to help her were great for the situation and brought closure to the storyline.
