The Phantom Twin  by  Lisa Brown My rating:  3 of 5 stars THE PHANTOM TWIN by Lisa Brown was better than I expected. By its cover, I thought this graphic novel was going to be childish. It was not that at all. The book has themes such as circus life, oddities, coping with a new reality, and breaking out of the negative cycle. I enjoyed the story, but it was a bit choppy or disconnected at times. Black Cake  by  Charmaine Wilkerson My rating:  3 of 5 stars The Pooches & Pages Book Club discussed BLACK CAKE by Charmaine Wilkerson last night. I listened to the audiobook narrated by Lynnette R. Freeman. I was pulled into this multigenerational saga from the start. The characters and the story felt real. Unfortunately, along the way, it seems that the author could not hold on to the thread that held the story together and I started to disconnect with the novel. The ending was good but was weaker than the way the novel started. Firefly Lane  by  Kristin Hannah My rating:  5 of 5 stars FIREFLY LANE by Kristin Hannah is a beautiful (sometimes frustrating) story about friendship, family, and love. I loved the characters and all their flaws. The story was often heartbreaking, and I shed a few tears as I read it. I appreciate that the author brings awareness to inflammatory breast cancer (IBC). Knowing how to recognise the signs and symptoms of this type of cancer goes a long way in defeating it. Love on the Brain  by  Ali Hazelwood My rating:  5 of 5 stars LOVE ON THE BRAIN by Ali Hazelwood was exactly what I needed to lift my spirit. The past week has been difficult, and I need something to distract me. This book did just that. I loved everything about it… the science aspect, the enemy to lover trope, the quirky characters. I love how the author builds Bee and Levi’s relationship to the point where you have no choice but to cheer: “Yes, finally”. That was just perfection! Marlowe Banks, Redesigned  by  Jacqueline Firkins My rating:  4 of 5 stars MARLOWE BANKS, REDESIGNED by Jacqueline Firkins is a slow-burn love story of Costume Production Assistant, Marlowe (like the detective from Raymond Chandler books) and hunky Scottish actor, Angus (not the meat). They met on a TV set and learned quickly how complicated love life can be when you are a celebrity. I loved how they finally found their footing and their happily ever after. This is a fun and entertaining romcom. It Starts with Us  by  Colleen Hoover My rating:  2 of 5 stars I just finished reading IT STARTS WITH US by Colleen Hoover and I know I will be sharing an unpopular review. I loved It Ends with Us and assumed that I would love It Starts with US; it was not the case. 💣 SPOILER ALERT – STOP READING IF YOU ARE PLANNING TO READ THIS BOOK!! 💣 The book gave an illusion that Lily and Atlas will have a happily ever after. Atlas’ marriage vows sucked. They were so negative and uninspiring. I don’t think they will make it as a couple with an attitude like that. This entire book could have been an epilogue to It Stops with Us. I am not even sure why the author included Atlas’ mother and brother storyline. It was way too undeveloped and did not bring anything to the story. Overall, this book was disappointing. Many people loved the book, so don’t listen to me. Do you! Pride & Puppies  by  Lizzie Shane My rating:  3 of 5 stars Happy Saturday! PRIDE & PUPPIES by Lizzie Shane is the 4th book in the Pine Hollow Series. I enjoy the series because it has a small town feel and there are puppies involved. In this book, I enjoyed the characters. However, the "friends to lovers" plot dragged a bit and lacked sparks. George was a bit too perfect. He needed some character flaws. I am glad Charlotte and George eventually found their happily ever after. This novel is a feel-good romance with lots of great Jane Austen’s quotes and two cute puppies in it.
