Robert's Hill (or The Time I Pooped My Snowsuit) and Other Christmas Stories  by  Jeremy John My rating:  4 of 5 stars ROBERT’S HILL (for the time I pooped my snowsuit) AND OTHER CHRISTMAS STORIES by Canadian author, Jeremy John had me in stitches. My husband saw me laughing and made me read parts out loud for him to partake in this fun reading moment. My favourite story is Christmas Time in the Neighbourhood, a story of the time Mr. Rogers came to Jeremy’s home. I also enjoyed The Sweet Things, a touching story about the creation of the candy cane. This small book is packed with emotions from laughter to tears. I recommend it. Eight Perfect Hours  by  Lia Louis My rating:  4 of 5 stars I am getting more and more into the Christmas spirit. Our tree is up and it is wonderful to walk my neighbourhood at night to see all the beautiful displays of Christmas lights. I just finished reading EIGHT PERFECT HOURS by Lia Louis. This highly emotional romance with a hint of serendipity was a great read. I enjoyed Noelle; she has such a big heart. I also loved the shout-out to Snowy Québec (that is where I am from). I loved how the book started and how it ended. The author did not shy from portraying characters with mental health issues and showing their vulnerability. Good Girl, Bad Blood  by  Holly Jackson My rating:  4 of 5 stars GOOD GIRL, BAD BLOOD by Holly Jackson was mind-boggling good. I enjoyed the first book in this series, and I was afraid that the second book would not be as good. Not only was it good, I think I liked it better than the first book. Black Cake  by  Charmaine Wilkerson My rating:  3 of 5 stars The Pooches & Pages Book Club discussed BLACK CAKE by Charmaine Wilkerson last night. I listened to the audiobook narrated by Lynnette R. Freeman. I was pulled into this multigenerational saga from the start. The characters and the story felt real. Unfortunately, along the way, it seems that the author could not hold on to the thread that held the story together and I started to disconnect with the novel. The ending was good but was weaker than the way the novel started. Firefly Lane  by  Kristin Hannah My rating:  5 of 5 stars FIREFLY LANE by Kristin Hannah is a beautiful (sometimes frustrating) story about friendship, family, and love. I loved the characters and all their flaws. The story was often heartbreaking, and I shed a few tears as I read it. I appreciate that the author brings awareness to inflammatory breast cancer (IBC). Knowing how to recognise the signs and symptoms of this type of cancer goes a long way in defeating it. Marlowe Banks, Redesigned  by  Jacqueline Firkins My rating:  4 of 5 stars MARLOWE BANKS, REDESIGNED by Jacqueline Firkins is a slow-burn love story of Costume Production Assistant, Marlowe (like the detective from Raymond Chandler books) and hunky Scottish actor, Angus (not the meat). They met on a TV set and learned quickly how complicated love life can be when you are a celebrity. I loved how they finally found their footing and their happily ever after. I loved It Ends with Us and assumed that I would love It Starts with US; it was not the case. 💣 SPOILER ALERT – STOP READING IF YOU ARE PLANNING TO READ THIS BOOK!! 💣 The book gave an illusion that Lily and Atlas will have a happily ever after. Atlas’ marriage vows sucked. They were so negative and uninspiring. I don’t think they will make it as a couple with an attitude like that. This entire book could have been an epilogue to It Stops with Us. I am not even sure why the author included Atlas’ mother and brother storyline. It was way too undeveloped and did not bring anything to the story. Overall, this book was disappointing. Many people loved the book, so don’t listen to me. Do you! Pride & Puppies  by  Lizzie Shane My rating:  3 of 5 stars Happy Saturday! PRIDE & PUPPIES by Lizzie Shane is the 4th book in the Pine Hollow Series. I enjoy the series because it has a small town feel and there are puppies involved. In this book, I enjoyed the characters. However, the "friends to lovers" plot dragged a bit and lacked sparks. George was a bit too perfect. He needed some character flaws. I am glad Charlotte and George eventually found their happily ever after. The Prisoner  by  B.A. Paris My rating:  3 of 5 stars THE PRISONER by B.A. Paris started with a bang but became predictable too early. I have enjoyed many of Ms. Paris’ books and was surprised by the lack of twists or true mystery in this one. I enjoyed the idea of the book, but the story did not deliver what I expected. Two sisters, a murder, one is accused and the other is chosen to defend her… that’s a great plot. Daytripper  by  Fábio Moon My rating:  3 of 5 stars This graphic is beautifully illustrated, and the story is curious. Each chapter offers a different end to Brás de Oliva Domingos’ life. The story is about death or Brás finding it at different stages of his life. In the end, I am not sure Brás lived his life to its full potential. Did he find happiness? I think so. Did he live his dreamed life? I love the treasure hunt and how Hope found happiness and a new family while hunting it. I love the bookshop setting as well. Three Day Road  by  Joseph Boyden My rating:  5 of 5 stars I finished reading THREE DAY ROAD by Joseph Boyden. This is the first book in the Bird Family Trilogy. This novel about two Cree soldiers serving in the Canadian military during World War I, and Niska, the last Oji-Cree woman to live off the land, is stunning and heartbreaking. The descriptions in this book are raw and evoke deep emotions. I was transported to France amidst the ugliness of WWI, and at the same time, I was travelling the beautiful rivers of northern Ontario on a canoe while listening to the stories of Niska and her nephew, Xavier. This is one of the best written books I have ever read.
