The Dutch Wife by Ellen Keith
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

The Dutch WifeTHE DUTCH WIFE by Ellen Keith is a novel that explores the darkest corners of human existence during the tumultuous times of World War II. This gripping narrative intricately weaves together the lives of Marijke, Karl Müller, and Luciano Wagner, delving into the complexities of survival, love, and resistance. While the book presents a compelling portrayal of life in concentration camps and the struggles people faced, it falls short in providing new insights into the depths people go to ensure their survival in horrific conditions. The character of the Nazi officer, Karl, remains somewhat enigmatic, and his motivations could have been more profoundly explored. The dual storylines, shifting between Argentina and Germany, appear somewhat disjointed and, in some instances, unnecessary. Luciano's narrative could have been more compelling if given the opportunity to stand on its own. This novel certainly has its moments but falls short of making a truly memorable impact.
