THE SECOND ENDING by Michelle Hoffman is a sparkling debut that explores the themes of second chances and the transformative power of music. The eccentric cast of characters, centered around two talented pianists and a dueling piano competition, adds depth to the story. While the lengthy backstories in the first half of the book may have benefited from some editing, perseverance is rewarded as the pace picks up and the narrative gains momentum. The two likable music coaches bring a refreshing dynamic to the emotionally challenged competitors, creating a more engaging storyline. Although the revenge and blackmail elements feel slightly disjointed, the overall message of not giving up on one's dreams and embracing new beginnings shines through. In the end, patience pays off, making this book a worthwhile read.
