📚 Hello Book Friends! SPEAK: THE GRAPHIC NOVEL written by Laurie Helse Anderson and illustrated by Emily Carroll is a powerful heartbreaking read. The painful silent story of Melinda was tragic. The way her peers treated her was unfair and plain mean. At the beginning of the book, the author mentioned that her novel was banned in some high school. Why??? Sadly, this is not a unique story and young teenagers could find help through a story like this one. I am not saying that this book is a solution to help rape victims, but it is part of the solution. It is important to educate young women that “no means no” and that reporting a sexual assault is the right thing to do. It is also important to educate teenagers to recognize the signs that say that someone is suffering in silence to support them and not reject them. This is a must read. Speak comes as a full novel or as a graphic novel. The graphic novel was beautifully and appropriately illustrated.
